Orange Community Players facing $35K roof replacement after heavy rains

For the past six decades, Diana Hill has performed on the Orange Community Players’ stage alongside buckets positioned to catch dripping roof water.

Until recent rain storms, the non-profit has managed to weather the leaky conditions, but it plans to enter its 60th season as dry as possible with half a brand new roof.

Hill, a long-time OCP member, said she is ready for it. Since Hurricane Ike, the roof has been hanging on by a thread, and recent storms have worsened the situation.

“It’s my goal to not be on the board for the theater’s last year,” said Al Vasquez, a 15-year board member.

“We need to keep it alive.”

Vasquez and the other 17 board members are planning to replace the front half of the roof, which adds up to 2,400 square feet, at a cost of $35,000.

“There’s been leaks here and there, but this one was rough,” said Vasquez, who directs and takes care of building repairs and props.

After the roof sustained significant damage on June 29, members applied a “quick fix,” knowing that the entire roof would have to be replaced sooner rather than later.
